Southwest Research Consortium (SRC) Members

Resources from the following consortium members facilitate the capability of UTSA to conduct mental health research:

The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA)

UTHSCSA is composed of five schools: the Dental School, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Medical School, the School of Allied Health Sciences, and the School of Nursing. Approximately 2,700 students are enrolled in more than 40 degree and certification programs. UTHSCSA is among the nation’s leading clinical and biomedical research centers with major studies in aging, AIDS, cancer, diabetes, stroke prevention, substance abuse and addiction, and hepatitis. The Academic Center for Evidence-Based Nursing is housed in the School of Nursing and is the first such center in the nation, focused on improving healthcare through evidence-based practice. The RIC is a University of Texas laboratory dedicated to biomedical imaging research. Current capital equipment includes a fully equipped PET laboratory (GE 4096 scanner, Scanditronix MC-17 cyclotron, and a fully robotic radiochemistry laboratory), a magnetic resonance imaging laboratory (Elscint 1-meter bore Prestige imager and GE 2T CSI imager), an event-related potentials laboratory; and a fully equipped computing laboratory. The facilities also include an ultra-high-resolution, small-bore PET scanner and a magnetoencephalography laboratory.

Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR)

SFBR was founded in 1941 as a nonprofit scientific institution. Although the trust indenture provided for activities in almost any field of research, its trustees adopted the policy that the institution would devote itself exclusively to biomedical research. The Foundation had a small staff in 1947, and received its first grant from the National Institutes of Health in 1952. In 1959, it occupied a new site with buildings supported by private gifts and an NIH research facilities grant. Numerous facilities have been added subsequently with the aid of an NIH research facilities grant in 1966 and many gifts from private donors. The Foundation has a full time staff of 65 with doctoral degrees, a technical staff of 102, and an administrative and supporting staff of 165 persons.

Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC)

The Department of Clinical Investigation (DCI) at BAMC provides comprehensive services for biomedical research including laboratory facilities, protocol review and consultation services. It supports basic and clinical research and provides expertise in biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, and physiology.
